- Accepted in a limited and sometimes inconsistent way; most hotels and hostels accept them, as do entry fees at Petra and Wadi Rum. ATMs dispense 20 and 50 JD notes and may charge high fees (up to 7 JD).
- Tipping
- Taxi drivers are not normally tipped; the fare is simply rounded up to the nearest 5 or 10 piastres.
- Tap water
- Considered drinkable, at least in some areas, but most residents drink bottled water, the safer choice for visitors.
- Emergencies
- 911 (ligne d'urgence centralisée : police, ambulanciers, pompiers)
Pitfalls
valid until 1 September 2027Fake 'free ride' between the Citadel and the Roman Theatre
Some drivers offer a free ride as a 'welcome to Jordan', then wait for the tourist and refuse to start the meter for the next trip, then charge an exorbitant price on arrival.
Fake taxis / private cars near bus stations
Private vehicles pose as taxis around bus stations, offer to charge 'whatever you want' then demand more. Insist on paying the standard fare (2-3 JD maximum).
Taxis lurking near the airport bus stops
When the Airport Express bus arrives, particularly at the North terminus, taxis deliberately overcharge new arrivals and sometimes board the bus posing as the official service, which they are not.
Airport→city taxi fare not fixed on the return trip
The 22.5 JD fare is fixed only from the airport to the city. For the return trip (city to airport), drivers often charge very inflated prices; negotiate around 20 JD.
Guides/drivers receiving commissions
Restaurants and hotels recommended by guides or taxi drivers may include a commission of 30 to 50% paid back by the merchant, artificially inflating prices (country source).
Souvenirs more expensive in tourist areas
Souvenir prices in Amman, Petra or Jerash are 2 to 3 times higher than in cities like Madaba or Irbid (country source).
Closures during Ramadan
During Ramadan, it is almost impossible to buy food from dawn to sunset, even for tourists; major shopping malls forbid their food outlets (e.g. McDonald's, Starbucks) from selling during these hours.
