Pitfalls
valid until 1 September 2027Urinating in the canals
About 25 people drown each year in Amsterdam's canals, almost always drunk men attempting to urinate into the canal. This is the leading cause of tourist deaths in the city.
Taxis at Centraal Station and Leidseplein
Some drivers refuse short trips or quote exaggerated fares; even with the meter running, they may take a roundabout route to push the fare up to €15 or more. No ride within the historic centre should cost more than about €10.
Snorders (unlicensed taxis)
Illegal drivers operating mainly in Zuidoost, with a questionable reputation; use only with caution.
Tourist areas prone to scams (Leidseplein, Rembrandtplein)
High prices and numerous reported scams in these areas heavily frequented by tourists.
Pickpockets in tourist areas and trams
Reported specifically in busy districts, tourist sites and trams; signs sometimes indicate high-risk areas.
Fake injured person asking for money
In quieter tourist areas, a man appears "bleeding" near a hotel popular with tourists and asks for a small sum for transport to hospital; this is a scam known to hotels.
Drug sellers on the A16 (Breda-Rotterdam)
Sellers try to attract the attention of young drivers of foreign cars; if approached, stop at a service station and ask the manager for advice, as police monitor these areas.
Bicycle theft
Amsterdam has one of the highest bicycle theft rates in the world (more than 40,000 thefts per year according to Wikivoyage FR); a sturdy lock is essential, and bicycles sold informally on the street are certainly stolen.
Areas to avoid at night
Nieuw-West (especially Osdorp) and Zuidoost have a reputation for violence; some parts of Noord and east of Oosterpark (Oost) are also less comfortable. Avoid walking alone at night in the centre after midnight, particularly Kalverstraat and Nieuwendijk.
Tourist-trap restaurants
Generally avoid restaurants along the Damrak and be careful around Leidseplein, known as tourist traps.
Street drug sellers / Red Light District
Sellers offer hard drugs on the street, particularly in the Red Light District; the products sold are often fake and can lead to theft if you follow the seller into a narrow street.
Taking photos of prostitutes
It is forbidden to photograph prostitutes in the Red Light District, under penalty of an aggressive reaction.
