Pitfalls
valid until 28 August 2027Fake police officer scam
In the touristic areas of the centre (Omonia, Syntagma, Plaka), a stranger asks for directions, then other people present themselves as police officers with a fake badge, accuse the victim of buying drugs and ask for passport and wallet for 'verification', taking the opportunity to steal money (source 1).
Pickpockets on the metro
Pickpocketing is frequent on the metro, especially at transfers with the airport line, as well as on buses and in Plaka. It is advisable to keep your bag in front of you (source 1).
Taxis: meter scam
In very busy touristic places, some drivers offer an exaggerated flat rate (e.g. 20 € for a short trip) instead of using the meter. You should insist on using the meter, and in case of dispute ask for a receipt and the plate number to report to 171 (source 1).
Areas to avoid at night
The surroundings of Omonia square are known for pickpocketing, prostitution and visible drug use, even during the day. Also to avoid at night: Vathi square, the area between Agiou Konstantinou and Karolou/Marni, Philopappou hill, and the back streets of Piraeus (source 1). Source 2 also recommends avoiding Omonia and Monastiraki at night.
Football jerseys
Avoid wearing an Olympiacos jersey in Athens, especially on match days, because of the intense rivalry with Panathinaikos, which can lead to harassment or even violence (source 1).
Demonstrations and the Exarcheia area
Demonstrations and clashes between anarchists and police are frequent, particularly near Syntagma and in the Exarcheia district. Parking a car overnight in Exarcheia can expose it to damage (source 1).
Fake silver hallmark on jewelry
Some dishonest sellers stamp the '925' hallmark on the clasp of a silver-plated piece of jewelry, while the jewelry itself is not solid silver (source 2).
Unauthorized street vendors
In Plaka and Monastiraki, street vendors sell counterfeits, cheap copies and illegal CDs; they are operating illegally and disappear when police approach (source 1).
When to go
Two measurements in the same unit, so a single axis. The dotted line is the swimming threshold the engine actually applies.
