Pitfalls
valid until 1 September 2027Taxi scams
Taxi scams are common in Belgrade. Avoid taxis waiting directly at airport arrivals. Prefer booking via a mobile app (which tracks the route and calculates the price) or by phone. Check that the taxi has a roof sign with the city coat of arms and a number, and that the plate ends in TX; otherwise it is an unregulated private taxi that may charge up to four times the normal fare. Always insist that the meter be used, except in the case of a fixed-price package from the airport.
Bus station (BAS) and hidden fees
Belgrade's bus station (moved to Novi Beograd in 2024) charges 300 RSD to access the platforms, sometimes included in the ticket but not if it was bought online (in which case a separate platform card must be purchased, with a queue that can cause you to miss the bus). A surcharge of 100 RSD per piece of luggage placed in the hold may also be requested by the driver.
Touts and fake porters at long-distance bus stops
At stops (every 3-4 hours) on long-distance bus journeys, stay alert about your belongings and be wary of taxi touts and people presenting themselves as luggage porters on arrival.
Provoked fights at night
When going out at night (bars, clubs), there is a risk that local individuals may seek provocation to start a fight, especially targeting a group or a lone person. It is advisable to ignore them and move away.
Hostility towards LGBTQ people
Public displays of affection between people of the same sex may attract disapproval, or even insults or violence. Exercise discretion, and be vigilant when entering or leaving LGBTQ venues.
