• San Cristoforo district

  The most dangerous district in Catania, located near the city centre, at the end of Via Plebiscito. Avoid walking there alone at night.

• Around the station

  As in other cities, avoid the station area, especially at night.

• Pizzo (mafia extortion)

  Some shopkeepers pay a protection tax to the mafia. The Addiopizzo Catania movement brings together shopkeepers who refuse to pay; support them by shopping there.

• Pickpocketing

  Avoid wearing jewellery or carrying large bags or visible camera equipment, which attract the attention of pickpockets found throughout the city.

• Begging

  People may ask for money in the street; it is advisable to simply decline politely.
