Airport → centre
valid until 28 November 2026The airport is 7 km from the centre.
- Metro (red line)simplest40 min·1,50 € 28 August 2026
Change at Alameda to the green line to reach the hyper-centre (Baixa-Chiado, Rossio, Cais do Sodré). The English source indicates a possible journey from 1.75 € with the Navegante zapping and about 25 min to Baixa-Chiado.
- Aerobus (line 91)3,50 € 28 August 2026
every 20 min between 7:00 and 21:00

- Bus (lines 5, 8, 22, 44, 45, 83)10 min·1,35 € 28 August 2026
Some lines such as the 22 do not accept luggage. The English source mentions an on-board fare of 2€ and a bus 44 linking Oriente station in 10 min.
- Taxi10 € 28 August 2026
Add 1.5 € per suitcase (fr source). The en source indicates about 16€ (Feb. 2024) with 1.20€/bag according to the meter.
- Taxi voucher (airport)18 € 28 August 2026
Valid for all destinations in the city centre, luggage included.
- Ride-hailing (Uber/Bolt)13 € 28 August 2026
About 13€ to the city centre (Feb. 2024). Vehicles identified by the TVDE sign, booking via the app is mandatory.
Why that one: The cheapest solution, frequent and direct from the airport to the centre despite a line change; the public transport network is considered efficient by the sources, and taxis have a tarnished reputation (overcharging attempts).

Pitfalls
valid until 28 August 2027Paid couvert at restaurants
Bread, butter, pâté, cheese, olives brought to the table are charged and not always listed on the menu under 'couvert'. Refusing them as soon as they arrive also speeds up service (otherwise the wait can last up to 30 min).
Tram 28 and pickpockets
Tram 28, very touristy, runs through narrow streets where pickpocketing is reported; both sources warn about this.
Taxi drivers and restaurants
Never ask a taxi driver to recommend a restaurant: he will take you to an expensive tourist establishment where he earns a commission.
Airport taxis and overcharging
Some drivers have a reputation for overcharging attempts; always ask for the price before departure, demand a number and a receipt if there is a problem. An airport taxi voucher (18€) helps avoid this risk.
Arrumadores (unofficial parking attendants)
People position themselves near vacant parking spots to 'help' you park and then demand money. Refuse and avoid interacting; if you refuse, there is a slight risk of vehicle damage.
Armed robbery and drug dealing near Bairro Alto/Santos
Areas reported for violent incidents and drug trafficking, especially at night; you may be approached for drugs there, notably on rua Augusta.
Fake police officer scam
An accomplice poses as a police officer and asks you to pay a 'fine' after another person has offered drugs. You should walk away immediately without interacting.
ATMs and PIN code theft
Groups of young people watch ATMs, spot the PIN code, then distract the victim to withdraw the maximum allowed (200€ per withdrawal, up to twice a day). Avoid late withdrawals, especially near Cais do Sodré station.
Neighbourhoods to avoid at night
Bairro Alto, its alleys, and Cais do Sodré are flagged for the risk of nighttime assault; Intendente and Martim Moniz are also notorious (prostitution, trafficking, rowdy atmosphere at night), although they can be visited by day.
Old azulejos at flea markets
Do not buy old azulejos at flea markets: they have often been removed from façades without authorisation, meaning they are stolen.
Glória funicular closed
In September 2025, a funicular car derailed and was destroyed, with several deaths; it is not certain whether service has resumed.
When to go
Two measurements in the same unit, so a single axis. The dotted line is the swimming threshold the engine actually applies.
