Pitfalls
valid until 28 August 2027"It's closed" / "it's a prayer area"
A common trick used by fake guides who claim a place is closed or off-limits in order to redirect you to an overpriced shop. Ignore them and keep walking.
"Only every 15 days"
A seller claims that a Berber group only comes to trade every 15 days, to create a sense of urgency to buy.
Tanneries
Touts offer a free tour of the medina's tanneries and then aggressively demand money. The visit is actually free and unrestricted; it is better to go in a group.
Directions followed by a demand for payment
Strangers follow you giving directions and then ask for money at the end. Never pay more than 20 dirham to be guided out of the medina, negotiating the price beforehand.
Snake charmers
Keep your distance unless you want to pay about 20 dirham: they put a snake around your neck for a photo and then ask for payment.
Taxis without a meter at tourist spots
At hotspots (train station, bus station, CTM office, Djemaa El-Fna), taxis default to refusing the meter and overcharge. The metered fare from the station to Djemaa El-Fna is 13 dirham during the day; 20 dirham is a good price for a tourist, while the fare asked is often 50 to 70 dirham. Walking 100 m away from the tourist site allows you to get a metered fare.
Aggressive touts in the evening at Djemaa El-Fna
Food stalls can be pushy (menu thrust in your face, being grabbed by the arm) and use the "free" trick that turns out to be charged (small extra dishes billed at 5 dirham each). Pay immediately upon receiving the dish to avoid a surprise at the end of the meal.
"Free" henna then charged a high price
Sellers offer a free henna tattoo and then demand an inflated price (up to 10 times the local price). Refuse any "free" offer. Very black, shiny henna may contain PPD, with a risk of allergy; natural brown henna is preferable.
Touts near the bus stations (CTM, gare routière)
Unofficial taxi drivers wait outside the stations (train, CTM) and ask for at least 50 dirham without using the meter, against an actual metered fare of about 12-13 dirham to Djemaa El-Fna. Walk to the main street to hail an independent taxi.
Touts at the bus station claiming the bus is full
They try to convince travellers that a bus is "full" in order to steer them towards a grand taxi or sell them something else. Leave the station and buy the ticket directly from the conductor on board.
Fake Apple/Samsung smartphones
The smartphones sold at Djemaa El-Fna under the Apple and Samsung brands are functional Chinese copies but with lower-quality components; negotiate accordingly.
Orange juice diluted with tap water
Some street vendors dilute orange juice with tap water to increase the volume, or overcharge (10 dirham instead of 4). Check the price and the pressing before paying, and avoid ice cubes.
Shoes with paper in the sole
It is common for shoes sold in the souks to contain paper stuffing in the insole. Check by bending the shoe and feeling/listening for paper rather than relying on the seller's demonstration.
Fake synthetic rugs sold as natural wool
Some sellers sell rugs made of synthetic fibres as wool. Test: pull out a small piece of wool from the back of the rug and set it alight; natural wool does not burn away and smells of singed sheep. Silk has never been produced in Morocco.
