Integrated 'Corsa Semplice' ticket at 1.50 € valid for a single journey on a single company; integrated hourly ticket (1h) at 1.80 € usable on all modes and companies; day pass at 5.40 €. TAP & Go with a contactless bank card is accepted on the metro and the Circumvesuviana. The Alibus bus to the airport cannot be taken with the day ticket.

Card payments

Authorised taxis must have a card payment terminal, but some drivers push for cash payment or overcharge in case of card payment, which is illegal. Museums do not always accept payment cards, so plan to carry cash.

• Fake taxis and unscrupulous drivers at the airport

  Some taxi drivers (sometimes authorised) claim to offer the same price as the Alibus but actually charge more (children counted extra, departure only when the minivan is full). There are also unauthorised illegal taxis. Check the licence, the meter, and require the fixed fare displayed before departure.

• Taxi overcharging

  Even authorised drivers may refuse to use the meter, invoke fictitious rates, hide the fixed fare list, or demand cash payment while refusing cards (illegal). Always agree on the price or check the meter before departure, and explicitly ask for a fixed fare or the meter.

• Counterfeit sellers on the street

  Do not buy counterfeit items (bags, glasses, branded products) sold on the street: plain-clothes police monitor this trade, and even the buyer risks arrest and a heavy fine under Italian law.

• Fake electronics sold on the street

  Street vendors offer fake iPhones, iPads or cameras: they show a genuine model then swap it for a fake with a quick sleight of hand at the time of sale.

• Areas to avoid

  Scampia and Secondigliano are to be avoided at all times. In the historic centre, exercise caution in Forcella, Sanità and Quartieri Spagnoli, especially after dark.

• Caution near the central station

  The area around Napoli Centrale and Piazza Garibaldi is reported to have many thefts; avoid staying there longer than necessary, especially at night. The south side of the square (on the left as you exit the station) is safer than the north side.

• Fake gift-giving followed by a payment request

  Some people offer images or objects presented as gifts (pictures of old Naples, etc.) but then demand payment.

• Fake road accidents

  Beware of people who try to involve you in a fake road accident in order to then defraud or rob you.

• Football shirts to avoid

  Avoid wearing a Juventus, AC Milan, Inter Milan, AS Roma, Lazio or Fiorentina shirt, rivals of SSC Napoli, which is fervently supported locally. A Genoa shirt, on the other hand, is well regarded due to a friendship between supporters.

• Deliberately caused punctures on the road

  According to the source on Italy, some criminals take advantage of heavy traffic to puncture a tyre and then offer their help in order to steal valuables from the victims, a scenario notably reported in Naples.
